WE LIVE IN NON-ENGLISH!
At the 65th Grammy Awards in 2023, the broadcast opened with artista puertorriqueño Bad Bunny cantando unos de sus hits populares, (en español, porque pues claro). Well, not only was the closed-captioning not able to literally do what they're meant to do (close caption)...for neither his singing NOR his speaking later on, they didn't even bother to TRY. They didn't even bother to NAME THE LANGUAGE. Instead, closed captions read [singing in Non-English], [speaking Non-English]. What in the English-obssessed-linguicentrism world is that nonsense?
Well, that got our attention cuz we've been saying this all along. Are our non-English languages offensive in [U.S.] American society? Apparently they are. Apparently they're so "foreign," that monolingual people running high-profile national events can't even name them. The U.S. is the SECOND LARGEST SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD for crying out loud. We need to do better.
Let's keep this conversation going. Wear your NON-ENGLISH language proudly with this shirt! What we love about this shirt is that it's so ambiguous that it begs the question, "what is your non-English language?" when someone reads it. And that's a surefire way to spark conversation about bilingualism. Hopefully it will lead to positive interactions! But if not...oh, what's that?.. My non-English language offends you? Well, I wasn't talking to you anyways :P
